Homemade Gyros with Tzatziki

Ingredients for the meat

500g of pork tenderloin
a pinch of salt
a pinch of pepper
3 tbs of olive oil
juice of half a lemon

Ingredients for the tzatziki

a small cucumber
500g greek yoghurt
juice of half a lemon
a pinch of salt
a pinch of pepper
3 tbs of olive oil
2 cloves of garlic

Ingredients for the pita (serves 4)

4 cups of all purpose flour
2 cups of water
a pinch of salt
a pinch of pepper
4 tbs extra virgin olive oil

1 medium sized onion sliced
2 medium sized tomatoes sliced
half a kilo of fried potatoes
some fresh parsley
ketchup and/or mustard (optional)

Prepare meat: Preheat the oven at 150°C. In a tin foil put the meat and all the ingredients mentioned above. Put your irresistible meat in the oven and leave for 30 minutes. When the precious time comes, take the meat out of the oven, and let its delicious smell infiltrate your lungs. Preheat a frying pan with a tbs of olive oil. Cut the pork in really thin slices and add them to the frying pan. Remove when nice and brown.

Prepare tzatziki: In a bowl add olive oil, chopped garlic, lemon juice, seasoning and greek yoghurt. Slice the cucumber in half and with a spoon remove all the seeds. Grate the 2 halves in a bowl and drain them (PROTIP:drain them using a coffee filter). Add the grated cucumber in the bowl with the rest of the ingredients and mix well. Keep refrigerated.

Prepare pita: In a large bowl add flour, olive oil and seasoning. Add the water and knead for 10 minutes. In a clean surface spread some flour and cut the dough in 4 pieces. Roll each piece out to a rough oval shape, (don't make it very thin) sprinkling the work surface and pita with flour to keep from sticking. In a frying pan add 2 tbs of olive oil in medium heat. Add the pita and let each side fry for 3 minutes.

When everything is ready, put a pita in a plate, spread some tzatziki, add the sliced onions, tomatoes, fresh parsley, fried potatoes and pork and top with mustard if desired. Enjoy!

  1. it looks delicious, you make me want to try to make it :)

    1. It was so so so so so tasty! The compliments should actually go to my ex boyfriend, he's a very good cook. But if you're too bored to try and do everything from the scratch, the highlights of the dish are definitely the pita and tzatziki. Instead of spreading the tzatziki on the bread you'd want to raid it with a spoon and eat it straight from the bowl! And its so refreshing on a warm italian summer! If you try it, please let me know how you liked it :D
